Kinda Like Stripes

Kinda Like Stripes is the name of my improv class. We had our level E improv show today at Second City. This finishes off my first year of improv training. It was a really good show. I am not saying we were good compared to professionals, but compared to other students at our level we were near the top.

I have really enjoyed working with all of the people in the group and hope to continue working with on projects in the future. So this is the end of one chapter of my life but hopefully that means that a new and better chapter is about to start.

Just wanted to thank all of my fellow classmates: Chris, Morgan, Doug Jones, Jud, Ped, Kal, Adam, Sean and Orin. It has been a hell of a ride. And also a thanks to my improv teachers along the way so far: Andy, Judy, James, Craig, and Jackie Stone.

Level E

Started the new improv term at Second City. New teacher is Jackie Stone. She seems like another good teacher. We went over what to expect from this term, and it is quite different than the other classes. We will be concentrating on putting up a full show (45 minutes) at the end of the term. We will be working on improving our improv, coming up with new games, and maybe even a little written sketch in there also. It is going to be a lot more outside work than we have done in the other classes, but it should be fun. There was one new person in class – Kal, and we lost one – Valerie. I didn’t know she wasn’t continuing with the improv. I’ll miss her.

Improv Show

My Second City Level D improv show was on Sunday. I think that it went really well. I messed up a little in the beginning and that threw me off a little. The rest of the class was great though. They were all very supportive of each other and we got a lot of laughs.

Where ya been?

Sorry for the blog neglect. Here is a post of all the crazy things that have been happening in my life.

Virginia moved up here. Some of her friends and Felper helped out. It wasn’t too bad, but I was glad to have help.

I had a weekend of work down in Champaign. It went really well. I like working with an organization that is doing great things.

Some of Virginia’s (and my) work friends threw her a baby shower. It was so great. There were so many good people there. I am glad that she has so many great friends. Also got a lot of useful stuff (and cute outfits) for when the baby comes.

While my mom was at the baby shower, I spent time with my dad. It was nice to talk to him for a while. We went for a walk around Meadowbrook. It was good to get out and walk.

Continued with writing sketches and getting ready for my improv class performance. It is going to be fun. It just feels better than last one. It is on Sunday if anyone wants to see me on the Second City stage.

Virginia found a great health care place. I am very relieved that she is at a quality place with nice people.

Still have more painting, moving, and unpacking to do. I’ll post more later.

Improv Improving

Had improv class tonight. I wasn’t perfect the whole time, but I finally feel like things are starting to click. Some of the scenes are really working (some are even funny). This level has a concentration on character. Don’t know why I haven’t made the connection before, but that really is the secret to improv. Quickly choose a character and then go from there. I have spent some time lately watching people. Everyone is a character, but some need a little bit of a kick to make it funnier.

I just signed up for a solo improv series of classes. It is taught by Andy Eninger, who was my first improv teacher. I like the idea of being able to create everything yourself. It is kind of like taking on the writer role in a scene. When I am writing I am in charge of everyone, and it will be fun to do this in improv. I am a little afraid of being responsible for everything in a scene. One of the best things about Second City training is that we learn to work off of each other. This will be a little different.
