Resolutions

Well I have to do it. What else are you supposed to do this year? So here we go:

Financial: Payoff debt. Don’t know if I can get it all done this year, but I need to take a big chunk out of it. I have planned out my spending for the year and it will be a pretty tight time, but hopefully that makes life easier after that.

Career: My boss is very encouraging about getting certifications. I would like to get certified as a pro user for all of Final Cut Studio, and additionally certified as a trainer for Final Cut Pro. We will also be building a TV/Radio Studio Facility. I have already learned a lot during the planning stage and I am sure I will learn more as we build it. At the end of the process, I would like to have enough knowledge to head up a project if I get an opportunity to build another one.

Learning: I learned a long time ago that in order to get good at something, you have to spend time doing little things everyday for many years. I have always made an effort to keep learning new things, but this year I want to reinforce that effort by writing down at least one thing that I learn everyday. I will be blogging a new piece of information each day at JustaJunkie.com. Most of the post will probably be about what I learn for work, so you should expect digital cinema, photography, journalism, web apps, audio production, or what ever other nugget I come across each day.

Health: I need to get in better shape. It is beautiful weather out here in Doha right now, so just a simple walk everyday will make a difference.

Creativity: This one has been the hardest for me. I have been forcing the issue lately and not gotten anywhere. I am still working on this it, but don’t have any answers. I’ll let you know when I get it figured out.

Ken Robinson on Creativity in Education

Education is so important to us as a people. It is a shame that, most of the time, we do it so poorly. I have always felt like I wanted to do something about this, but I wasn’t sure what to do. Recently, with the birth of my first child, it has even become more important. What I teach her will have a great effect on her life and happiness. That is what makes it so very important to do it right. I am doing my research now, because even though it seems like she isn’t doing much of anything, she is learning. She is taking everything in an forming her first thoughts about the world.

One of the things that I ran across was a little presentation done for the TED conference by Ken Robinson. He talks about how the origins of the modern education system where to teach people how to become good factory workers. Creativity is smashed out of our brains at an early age. I am hoping to avoid that with Joy. I hope that she always tries new things, and is brave enough to make mistakes. It is only by making mistakes, that we can be truly creative.

Here’s the video. Give it a watch.
