Next President? Yes!

Obama accepted the Democratic nomination for president tonight. Amazing speech. Not at all like his previous speeches. He laid out the case for choosing him over McCain. Barack is going to be such a great candidate. The convention as a whole was a great one for the dems. I don’t see how the Republicans can stop the momentum now.

Larry Jordan at Chifcpug

Larry Jordan was the guest speaker at the Chicago Final Cut Pro User Group. He is a well respected expert and trainer for Final Cut. Tonight he talked about HD workflow issues. I have been thinking a lot about the difficulties of HD for the last few years. At WILL they were just starting to work on their switchover when I left. There are so many choices that it is hard to tell which way things will end. Lots of questions, but not a lot of answers. Larry put forth a lot of those questions, but not even he had a lot of answers. He does have a lot of tips on his website to help deal with those problems for the people who have already made the plunge.

At the end of the meeting they always have a raffle. In all the time I’ve been going to these, I have not won anything. Tonight was different, I won the final prize of the night. It was a seat to Larry Jordan’s workshop when he comes to town in October. Hopefully I will be out of town by that time. If so, I know some people who would love to go to this seminar. So even though it probably won’t be of use to me, it was nice to win something.

Getting Better, Doc Visit

I was going to post some more details of my trip to Doha, but I was caught unexpected with a little stomach bug. The weekend was pretty brutal. It was hard to keep any solid food down. Monday was a little better and yesterday was the first day of real food. Today is even better than yesterday, but I am still not fully recovered. Hopefully a couple more days of rest and I will be back to full strength.

Went to the Doctor yesterday. Not really for the sickness, it was just a pre-scheduled regular checkup. Everything is doing well with my Diabetes control. A1C is 6.6, which is good enough. I would like to get a little better, but I am not disappointed. Cholesterol and Blood Pressure are doing well also. Doctor was happy with my upkeep and didn’t really suggest anything new. Looks like I am good for another little while.

Where in the World is Brian Paris?

For those of you who don’t know, I just got back from a trip to Doha, Qatar. It is a small country in the Middle East, just off of Saudi Arabia. Northwestern University is opening up a new campus there this fall. They brought me over to interview for a tech support job.

I would be supporting their Mac computers for their Journalism and Comm students. It is a very similar skill set to what I did at WILL in the past. I miss working for a University and doing the video support work, so I was very intrigued by the position. At the same time I was a little leery (and excited) about traveling half way around the world to work in a country that I didn’t know much about. In addition to them getting to know a little bit more about me and how I fit in with their group, I was there to see how it would be to live in Qatar. Turns out that Doha is an up and coming city with hopes of being an economic center for the future. There were great architecturally beautiful towers going up everywhere, and they are spending a lot of money to bring in the best in education and medicine. All that, and the people were pretty nice also. I am a little concerned about the driving though. I don’t even drive in Chicago, so it seems a little hectic there, but I am sure I would get used to it. It was hot and humid, but nothing that air conditioning couldn’t solve.

There were a few issues with the job that I was concerned with before I made my decision. First was my diabetes. I just wanted to make sure that it wasn’t going to be a problem to continue getting the treatment that I needed to stay healthy. Turns out that there is a big problem with diabetes in the area and they are very good at treating it. The staff there was very familiar with the disease, and I am sure that it won’t be a problem getting everything that I need. Once I had that concern relieved, I needed to know what type of people I was going to be working with. Well, it turns out that the staff over there seem to be the best assembled group I have seen. Everyone seems to genuinely like the work and their fellow coworkers, and each is very qualified at their positions. There is a lot of work to be done to get a new program off the ground, and each of the staff seems to want to work together to get the program going. I could definitely see myself fitting in with such a good group. Lastly I was a little worried about the equipment that I would be supporting. I was a little worried that they were ordering equipment without the support techs in place. Again it was another fear that was quickly alleviated. I forgot that they could very easily get help from the Evanston campus. They have been doing this work for years over there and were very familiar with the equipment needs. I also met the equipment coordinator who turned out to be a marvel. She has had to work here way through a new culture to get items that aren’t as readily available as they are here in the states. She is doing an amazing job getting through the paperwork involved and learning her way with the local vendors. It is a huge project, and I feel badly that she is doing it on here own. I wish that I could be there to help here out.

So, I come back from a five day trip more excited about the opportunity than when I left. (also a little exhausted). Now, I have to admit, I really want to get the job. I don’t remember the last time that I wanted a job so much, but also I time when I was so unsure about my possibilities about getting it. Usually, I am pretty sure about getting a job, but this is a special situation. Because there is such a small team, isolated from everyone else, with a lot of work that needs to be done, team chemistry is so important to success. I really feel like I am qualified to do the work and can learn any new skills that I don’t already possess, but I just hope that I fit in with the team chemistry. I love the team that the boss has put together so far, so I really respect his judgment when it comes to hiring. I just have to hope that he (and the rest of the staff) were able to see enough to feel comfortable bringing me in. I would feel a lot more comfortable if I hadn’t spent the trip so sleep deprived that my brain was mush, and at the same time so hyped up on caffeine that I was afraid I was visibly jittery most of the time. I’ve always done well in my previous jobs, so I just hope that it showed through this time.

I should find out next week, and I will keep you posted.

The Day of Infinite Possibilities

8-8-08.

I call it the day of infinite possibilities. There is something powerful built into these numbers. It is a day that can be the start of many new things in life.

In my life, I have had a couple of new opportunities show up today. I am really excited to see where my life goes in the next few months.

In history, it was 20 years ago today that the Cubs played their first night game. 8-8-88. It was rained out, so the first official one was the next day. I still remember how the tarp was used as a slip and slide.

Currently, the Olympic games are just getting underway. The opening ceremonies were so beautiful. It was perhaps the most beautiful performance that I have ever seen. Their use of video, fireworks, technical visuals, was only rivaled by the sheer numbers of people that performed. It was a sight to see. China has really outdone themselves with this one. I wasn’t really looking forward to this years Olympics, but as I flipping through channels, I was drawn to the images and am a little excited by it. Best opening ceremonies by far. The torch lighting just happened and it was beautiful. I can’t imagine all the work that went into this.

Ken Robinson on Creativity in Education

Education is so important to us as a people. It is a shame that, most of the time, we do it so poorly. I have always felt like I wanted to do something about this, but I wasn’t sure what to do. Recently, with the birth of my first child, it has even become more important. What I teach her will have a great effect on her life and happiness. That is what makes it so very important to do it right. I am doing my research now, because even though it seems like she isn’t doing much of anything, she is learning. She is taking everything in an forming her first thoughts about the world.

One of the things that I ran across was a little presentation done for the TED conference by Ken Robinson. He talks about how the origins of the modern education system where to teach people how to become good factory workers. Creativity is smashed out of our brains at an early age. I am hoping to avoid that with Joy. I hope that she always tries new things, and is brave enough to make mistakes. It is only by making mistakes, that we can be truly creative.

Here’s the video. Give it a watch.

Sirens and Great Day

After my show today, I went and saw an improv show at the Cornservatory. Jackie Stone, my improv teacher, is one of the founding members of the group, Sirens. They have been working together for 10 years or so, and it really shows. They are amazing together. This was truly great improv. It is good to see how if should be done.

After the show, Jackie invited us out to drink with the performers at the local bar. We had some great conversations. It was a beautiful night outside, good company, and a really good pulled pork sandwich. I walked for a while after and just enjoyed the night air.

It turned out to be one of the best days of my life. Second City graduation show, Corcoran’s burger with the group, great improv, good conversation, and a nice walk home. Wow. The last few days have just been great. I am trying to start a chain of good days. I am not talking about days that nothing bad goes wrong, but days that are actually filled with joy of life. Days where I am advancing, doing something new, creating, moving, creating memorable days. I had a time last year where everything was going great. Days that I will always remember. I want to get back to that feeling and am working on creating a chain of them. So far it has been three in a row. Let’s try for four tomorrow!!

Kinda Like Stripes

Kinda Like Stripes is the name of my improv class. We had our level E improv show today at Second City. This finishes off my first year of improv training. It was a really good show. I am not saying we were good compared to professionals, but compared to other students at our level we were near the top.

I have really enjoyed working with all of the people in the group and hope to continue working with on projects in the future. So this is the end of one chapter of my life but hopefully that means that a new and better chapter is about to start.

Just wanted to thank all of my fellow classmates: Chris, Morgan, Doug Jones, Jud, Ped, Kal, Adam, Sean and Orin. It has been a hell of a ride. And also a thanks to my improv teachers along the way so far: Andy, Judy, James, Craig, and Jackie Stone.

iphone 2

Hey everyone,

I haven’t written in a while. Things are going well. Just wanted to write a quick update. I’ll write more later.

I am writing this on my iphone right now. WordPress just released a new app for the second generation iPhone software. I am amazed with all the new apps that are available. I feel like I have a new phone just by getting a software update.

Shit!

Baby shit, that is. Joy shit on me for the first time today. Got it all over my shirt and pants. Pretty gross, but I am sure it will happen many more times. She is still doing well and cute as ever.
